SPMJ is proud to announce the launch of our first journalism contest later this year, created in memory of one of motorsports’ most influential figures, Carl Haas. Professional members will have the opportunity to compete for cash prizes while honoring the legacy of a true giant in racing history.

Celebrating the Legacy of Carl Haas

Carl Haas’ contributions to motorsports are legendary. Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America last month, Haas’ career spanned every corner of the racing world. He was a team owner, race promoter, parts supplier, and a leader in motorsports governance.

With Paul Newman, Haas co-owned Newman/Haas Racing, one of the most successful teams in CART and Champ Car history. Between 1984 and 2007, Newman/Haas Racing captured eight championships with drivers including Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Cristiano da Matta, and Sebastien Bourdais. In total, the team claimed over 100 Indy Car victories, becoming a dominant force in American open-wheel racing.

Beyond his team's achievements, Haas' influence extended across Can-Am, Formula 5000, Formula One, NASCAR, and the U.S. Road Racing Championship. His entries were driven by some of the sport’s greatest names, including Jackie Stewart, Brian Redman, Alan Jones, Jacky Ickx, and Masten Gregory.

Through Carl Haas Auto, he also built America’s largest racing parts distribution business, representing top brands like Lola and Hewland. His leadership roles with the SCCA, CART, Road America, and other institutions shaped the sport’s growth and professionalism.

Honoring Excellence in Journalism

In tribute to Haas’ lasting impact, SPMJ’s new journalism contests will award $200 to the first-place winner in each category. The contests are open to SPMJ professional members, with full details — including categories and submission guidelines — to be announced soon. Be sure to subscribe to SPMJ News to receive the latest contest updates.

We believe recognizing excellence in motorsports journalism is a fitting way to honor a man who spent his life advancing the sport at every level. As noted in the MSHF ceremony yearbook, “Few have enjoyed careers in motor racing as expansive as Carl Haas': Team owner, race promoter, racing car and parts salesman and longtime chairman of the SCCA's Board.”

Looking Ahead

At SPMJ, we are committed to creating new opportunities that support, celebrate, and strengthen the work of professional motorsports journalists. Launching these contests in Carl Haas’ name represents not only a tribute to his incredible career but also a continuation of the values he championed: excellence, innovation, and passion for racing.

We look forward to sharing more information soon and encourage all professional members to participate.

Together, we honor the past while building the future of motorsports journalism.
